Pain in the temples: What your body is telling you and how to relieve it holistically

Hello,

I am Sonia, massage therapist and Reiki master in Barcelona, passionate about my profession and providing holistic therapies with deep transformation processes for each person at Flor de Agua. I focus on the bodily, emotional, and spiritual part in addition to the mental part. We are a whole and many times in daily life we forget it or we feel fragmented.

Balancing each aspect of our being can help us understand beyond because one can be going through a moment of deep malaise, recurring sadness, or addiction, and by better understanding the causes, not through the mind but through something more transcendental, it helps us understand things with another perspective and take action to transform our life.

(The original version of this article is in spanish, I did this version with the translation online)

Today I share with you a little of my psycho-energetic work at the level of the temples.

Have you ever stopped to think about this area of the body? Has it ever hurt you? When? In what context?

I invite you to put both your hands at the level of the temples, close your eyes and wait a few minutes: what do you feel?

1- The origin of the word, and the vulnerability of the temples

The temples are in anatomy the temporal bone, which comes from the latin tempus, which means "time". There are several reasons why this word is related to time and more exactly to the passage of time, since many times it was in this area that men saw their first gray hairs appear. But it is also an area where depending on what emotional state we find ourselves in we can feel a "palpitation", a pulse marking the tempo and the rhythm of the time that passes.

If you can feel this pulse, it is because it is a very vulnerable area: indeed, at an anatomical level, the temple houses the pterion, a union where 4 bones of the skull meet, and which is one of the thinnest areas to protect the brain, barely a few millimeters thick. Underneath the temples is the middle meningeal artery, which if it is affected by a blow can have lethal consequences. Furthermore, this area has an important vascular network, which allows that in case of feeling heat (at a cerebral level) it can act as a kind of thermoregulating radiator lowering the cerebral temperature.

In fact, many times when our head hurts or this area indeed we can feel heat release from these areas.

And at a psycho-energetic level, this area is even more interesting: the temples being on top of a flat bone and with the middle meningeal artery, one can notice the pulse very easily in case of strong emotions such as anger or stress, or even with physical exercise. It is the symbol of the vulnerability of the "Self" and of impermanence. At the same time a sign of internal life force towards the outside and at the same time with a blow that crosses a few millimeters in this area the consciousness turns off…

2- The temples, not only a zone of vulnerability but also a zone of mental strength

When I work with the chakras, the temples have a very important role, they are like "wings" of the third eye, they are a support base for the sixth chakra, regulating intuitive peripheral vision. When I help you with a holistic massage in this part of the body, peripheral visual and non-visual stimuli are reduced, and blood flow and attention are concentrated towards the inside.

In fact, think of one of the gestures that intuitively we do when we want to concentrate and focus the mind on a specific thing: we can bring our fingers (index and middle) to the temples, closing our eyes to concentrate. Or think of science fiction movies, every time the archetype of a person with psychic powers such as telepathy is represented, they are represented with their fingers on their temples, as a symbol in the collective unconscious of the power to control the mind and project it outwards.

3 - Pain in the temples or referred pain?

If your temples hurt, many times it has to do with migraines and headaches. A gentle and repeated massage in those areas can help prevent future headaches. With energetic channelings, holistic massages, and Reiki one can also work in a deeper way on the causes of pain in the temples and thus prevent the pain from appearing again. If you feel your temples contracted, the flow of energy towards the upper brain becomes more difficult, and you can feel difficulties making decisions, as if the pain in the temples took command of your mental energy.

But sometimes the pain in the temples is a referred pain from other areas of the body such as the trapezius, which is why I usually work different areas of the body in a session and work in a global way.

Also sometimes people wake up with throbbing pain in the temples when in reality it is dental muscular fatigue (bruxism problems): likewise in this case in a holistic therapy session I can help you with a massage in these areas.

4 - Holistic therapy on the temples: How does it help you?

The temples are very important points to release anger (liver), calm headaches, and clear the eyesight.

By performing gentle, rhythmic, circular, and slow massages I stimulate your brain to transition from Beta waves (alert/stress) to Alpha waves (deep relaxation). It is a first step to deepen with Reiki therapies and release the emotions that your body may have stored in this area. Indeed, if you feel your temples rigid, hard to the touch you may in an unconscious way be repressing crying and anger, and holistic therapies allow letting go of everything accumulated.

Also in this area a lot of anxiety accumulates, and with a massage with a rhythmic tapping I help you release it, sending an electromagnetic signal to the cerebral amygdala to reduce the fear and panic response.
